Translations and the story of its invention vary a bit, most credit the dish to cooks in the court of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph who were attempting to create a ‘light’ dessert for the Empress. She declined it, but the dessert became the Emperor’s favourite and became known as Emperor’s Nonsense.
